About Teacher

Meta Santoso-Chien B.Mus.(Melb), M.App.Com.(Melb), A.Mus.A., A.Y.M.F.

Originally from Jakarta, Indonesia, Meta’s love of music began when she started learning music at Yamaha Music School at the age of 6. In 1995, at the age of 12, Meta was the Runner Up in the Yamaha Piano Competition and in 1998, she was awarded an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from the Yamaha Music Foundation Japan (A.Y.M.F).

In 1999, Meta moved to Melbourne and received piano tuition from Joan Bazeley and Mack Jost OAM. In 2000, Meta was awarded an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance from the Australian Music Examination Board (A.Mus.A.).

In 2001, having already had an interest in music pedagogy (the art of teaching), Meta attended the Victorian Music Teachers’ Association’s Summer Conference just before she commenced her tertiary music studies at the University of Melbourne. At the University, she received piano training from the internationally acclaimed pianist and recording artist, Michael Kieran Harvey and from a renowned music pedagogue, Professor Max Cooke OAM. In her penultimate year at the University, Meta commenced training to become an Accredited Suzuki Piano Teacher (Primary). During University, Meta was an Ormond Scholar for her academic excellence and a recipient of numerous music awards and scholarships.

Besides teaching piano at her private teaching studio in Surrey Hills, Meta is a piano teacher and accompanist (choral & instrumental) at Carey Baptist Grammar School, Public Relations & Marketing Committee member of the Australian Boys Choral Institute (ABCI), Committee member of the University of Melbourne Commerce Alumni Society (UMCAS), Accredited member of the Suzuki Talent Education Association of Australia (STEAA) and the Project Leader for Marketing & Sponsorship of the Australian Band & Orchestra Directors' National Conference (ANBOC) 2010 Steering Committee.

A vibrant and committed piano teacher, Meta continually attends music pedagogy conferences and professional development workshops to enhance her knowledge and skills. Meta aims to instill the love of music in each of her students and to inspire them to reach their highest musical potential through personalised music program (developed in consultation with the respective parent and student) that is suited to each student's personality, maturity, interests, motivation levels and ability. She believes that the relationships that she develops with her students and their parents are a long-term one, hence she focuses on creating personalised piano program that is monitored and revised regularly by herself in consultation with her students' parents to adapt to the different stages of her students' musical development. Meta hopes that this focus on personalised piano program would ensure that her students will continue to have positive experience with their instrument, the piano, and their love of music will continue throughout their entire lives regardless of what career path they choose to do in the future.
